ABOUT SVM BIOCLIMES

SVM BIOCLIMES - Sylvina Valeza Masagca (SVM) Biodiversity, Island Ecology and Climate Studies (CLIMES)

SVM BIOCLIMES focuses on BIODIVERSITY, ISLAND ECOLOGY and CLIMATE STUDIES as a research agenda. It is one of the proposed Centers of PACIFICTECH, a Philippine Non Governmental Organization located in Las Piñas City and Virac, Catanduanes, Philippines.

With the advent of changing Climate, the Ecology, Biodiversity and Biogeography of the island of Catanduanes is a growing concern to its citizens and stakeholders. Research advocates and enthusiasts are being encouraged and convinced by PACIFICTECH to look into these areas of research which are impacting many inhabitants not only in Catanduanes but the whole world.

What is Biodiversity?

Biology Dictionary

Biology is the study of living things. It is broken down into many fields, reflecting the complexity of life from the atoms and molecules of biochemistry to the interactions of millions of organisms in ecology. This biology dictionary is here to help you learn about all sorts of biology terms, principles, and life forms. Search by individual topic using the alphabetized menu below, or search by field of study using the menu on the left.

What is Island Ecology / Biogeography?

Island Ecology / Biogeography

(1) Island ecology is the study of island organisms and their interactions with each other and the environment. Islands account for nearly 1/6 of earth’s total land area,[1] yet the ecology of island ecosystems is vastly different from that of mainland communities. Their isolation and high availability of empty niches lead to increased speciation. As a result, island ecosystems comprise 30% of the world’s biodiversity hotspots, 50% of marine
tropical diversity, and some of the most unusual and rare species.[2] Many species still remain unknown.
The diversity of species on islands is highly impacted by human activities such as deforestation and the introduction of exotic species. In response, ecologists and managers are directing attention towards the conservation and restoration of island species. Because they are simple systems, islands provide an opportunity to study processes of extinction that can be extrapolated to larger ecosystems.

What are Climate Studies?

Climate Studies

The scientific understanding of climate change is based on a solid physical-theoretical foundation, and long-term observation and research. By analyzing the accelerated rise of the global climate and its wide-ranging effects on the risk of natural ecosystems and the social economy, and, particularly in view of the stringent targets of 1.5 degrees set by the Paris Agreement to limit global temperature rise, this study contends that climate security has become a new, non-traditional, security issue. The fundamental approach to implementing the objectives of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement is to develop clean energy vigorously and to accelerate energy transformation. Furthermore, building a global energy interconnection is emphasized as one of the solutions to promoting energy transformation.
